Beauty’s Eye-Patch Collision Exposes the Limits of Packaging Exclusivity

Fenty Skin, Glow Recipe and Huda Beauty previewed eye patches with “similar” grinder dispensers within days.

Why structural: a distinctive pack can become a shared category feature before a launch campaign finishes. Brands buying supplier innovation need to establish what they actually control. Otherwise, the development spend buys a brief head start while competitors arrive with the same selling point.

New US Sanctions Put China-Plus-One Sourcing Under Pressure

Trump signed Russia and Iran sanctions legislation on September 18, creating a pathway for tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian energy. India and China are exposed, but enactment does not automatically impose the maximum rate on either country.

Why structural: moving production out of China cannot remove exposure to trade policy if the alternative country faces similar pressure. For CPG brands, diversification needs to account for political dependencies alongside factory capacity. A second location is only useful if its risks differ.

Russia Takes Control of Nestlé’s Local Operations

Russia placed Nestlé and Auchan assets under temporary management following a September 17 decree. Nestlé operates six sites in Russia and employs more than 7,000 people. The company said it was assessing its options and would act to protect its rights.

Why structural: factories are fixed investments in countries whose rules can change. The earlier takeovers of Danone and Carlsberg operations already demonstrated that exposure. Nestlé's case reinforces the warning: continuing to serve a market does not guarantee continued control of the assets needed to serve it.

SPINS Makes AI Visibility a CPG Operating Requirement

SPINS announced Agentic Discovery on September 22, a platform designed to show brands how their products appear in AI recommendations. It combines product attributes, shopper intent and retail performance data to identify content gaps and prioritise improvements, according to the company.

Why structural: a product can win shelf space and still miss an AI shortlist. As recommendations become another route to purchase, consistent product information becomes part of distribution. Brands need to manage how machines interpret their products alongside how retailers stock and shoppers recognise them.

Chinese Beauty Exports Keep Growing Despite Trade Friction

Chinese hair-product exports to the US rose 12.4% to $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026, Reuters reported. Wig and press-on nail suppliers described strong American demand, with social platforms helping connect manufacturers to buyers despite trade tensions.

Why structural: tariffs change the price of sourcing, but do not instantly recreate a manufacturing ecosystem elsewhere. China's suppliers, specialist labour and production scale remain difficult to replace. Beauty brands planning a sourcing shift need to cost the capabilities they would lose, alongside the duties they might avoid.
